German GEV Certification

People are spending more and more time indoors. For this reason, the quality of indoor air and the level of emissions given off by materials installed on walls and floors are becoming increasingly important.

It is true that facades today are increasingly well insulated and window joints hermetically sealed. But the ventilation habits of the buildings’ residents have not been adapted to the technical progress and the increasingly tight building shell.

Emissions, particularly those from freshly applied paints and coatings, adhesives, sealants and other building materials, can cause the concentration of harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air to rise alarmingly even days after the materials were installed.

Finnish M1

Finnish emissions label for construction products and furniture

The Finnish emission label for building products and furniture is one of the leading quality labels in

the Scandinavian region. In 1995, the Finnish Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (FiSIAQ) developed

the first version of the label and awarded it to products for the first time in 1996.

Today’s certification body is the non-profit Building Information foundation RTS sr, which issues the label

in three categories – M1, M2 and M3 (M1 is the best category and stands for “low-pollutant”). For upholstered

office chairs, there is only the M1 category. Special rules apply to wood, glass, metal, stone and ceramic products

which are specified in the document “Classification of Indoor Environment 2018”.

French A+ VOC Label

VOC regulation for construction and furnishing products

Since Jan 1st, 2012, construction products, decoration and furnishing products to be traded in France for the first time are to be labelled with an emissions classification on the basis of VOC emissions tests. This is stated in the “Décret n° 2011-321” having been published on March 25th, 2011.

Since Sept 1st, 2013, this obligatory emissions classification and labelling regulation also applies to products which are already on the French market.

CertiPUR-US®

CertiPUR-US® is a certification program administered by a nonprofit organization.

CertiPUR® is a voluntary testing, analysis and certification programme for the environmental, health and safety properties of polyurethane foam used in bedding and upholstered furniture applications. It specifies substances that may not be used in the production of polyurethane foams and sets stringent maximum limits for some components.

This is A Health Checkup for Foam. When you buy products containing certified foam, you can be confident that the flexible polyurethane foam inside meets CertiPUR-US® standards for content, emissions, and durability, and has been analyzed by independent, accredited testing laboratories.

The Technical Guidelines provide complete details on the certification process and were established with guidance from the global foam industry and in conjunction with the leadership of the mattress and upholstered furniture industries. In addition, an advisory panel of scientists, academics, environmentalists and representatives of consumer groups provided invaluable input in the development process.

All certified flexible polyurethane foams are tested and analyzed twice in the first year, and re-certified annually thereafter. In addition, we conduct random on-site foam production plant checks of participating foam producers.
